Project Description | Woodson YMCA in Wausau, WI. The North and South wall of the stepped seating area in the Youth Lobby is clad in 7" Hexagon Tiles made from broken skateboards. Each tile is hand cut and shaped from real broken skateboards that would otherwise be destined for a landfill. The tiles are multicolored, each tile featuring its own unique vignette of skateboard graphic art and the various scuffs and scrapes acquired in it's previous life. Contours of the molded plywood skateboards are present in the tiles and they are echoed by the repeating tiles creating undulations and quilt-like quality across the wall surfaces. The well executed tile layout takes advantage of the motley color assortment to create a pair of well balanced and eye catching mosaics. North Wall Tile Installation - Approx. 6 sq/m |
Materials Used | Broken and worn out skateboards are an unfortunate byproduct of skateboarding. Millions of boards are broken each year and would be headed to landfills without skateboard recycling. Skateboards are made of very robust molded maple plywood. Curvy contours, colorful scraped graphic surfaces and multi color plys make recycled skateboards a truly unique and salvage worthy material. |
Sustainability | As mentioned previously, millions of broken skateboards would be destined for landfills if not for recycling programs such as that created by SkateOrDesign. Local skateshops and skateparks are the heart and soul of skateboarding. Local skate cultures thrive around these small, independent businesses, many of which are fueled by love of skateboarding and community more than want of money. Through our Skateboard "Buyback" Recycling Program we partner with independent skate shops, parks, and skate-related charities across the USA to collect broken boards for reuse. Skateboarders are motivated to keep busted boards out of the rubbish bin when the boards have value to their local skate shop or park. The Skateboard “Buyback” Program gives money back to these small skateboard businesses, or to skateboard related causes such as helping to fund a local skatepark project. |
Issues Faced | One issue faced regarding the specification of Recycled Skateboard Tile is the supply of the raw material. A robust and well developed skateboard recycling program is essential for the reliable acquisition of the material required. A second issue is difficulties of working with recycled skateboards. Skateboards are dirty when received and must be cleaned thoroughly, removing stickers, adhesive, griptape and grime, brightening the revived surface graphics. Special fixtures must be developed for cutting and shaping the plywood parts with varied contours. A multi step finishing process was developed to blend various surface textures and finishes that may occur on the tiles. |
