Project Description | Imbuing a touch of seamlessness with an overarching wabi-sabi aesthetic, ‘sequel bkc’ is futuristic in its form and earthy at its core. Soft edges and organic natural forms are coupled with custom-crafted design objects to spew forth a visually soft interior, reminiscent of the eternal charm it’s predecessor manifests. Much like the former, this space exudes timelessness through a multi-sensory character, evident in the tactility of its interiors. The naturally-lacquered, off-white channapatna beads, handmade in karnataka that previously wrapped around the counters, now float seven feet above the ground with an illusional warm glow. The monotonal rough walls continue to complement the fresh, vibrant produce with the addition of a patterned terracotta brick floor. While the soft-edged cafe area is umbrellaed by fluid oyster-like light fixtures, a crisply finished central partition leads into a formal dining space that continues to abide by the very same ethos of subtle luxury, slow living and a refined lifestyle. This half is encapsulated by a warm honey oak wood veneer that runs from the ground, onto the walls and along the gridded facade, bringing to light, the ‘wholesome’ experience of a sensorial meal. Marrying modernity and subtlety through a fusion of craft and organic food - the newest rendition of sequel is a conformation of perfect imperfection. Completion Date : September 2020 |
Materials Used | Raw, refined, organic - the material choices for the space pay homage to craft, handmade processes and subtle luxuries. From naturally-lacquered, off-white channapatna beads, handmade in karnataka floating seven feet above the ground with an illusional warm glow to monotonal rough walls complementing the fresh, vibrant produce with the addition of a patterned terracotta brick floor, every material is celebrated through curved facets. While the soft-edged cafe area is umbrellaed by fluid oyster-like light fixtures, a crisply finished central partition leads into a formal dining space that continues to abide by the very same ethos of eternal charm, slow living and a refined lifestyle. This half is encapsulated by a warm honey oak wood veneer that runs from the ground, onto the walls and along the gridded facade, bringing to light, the ‘wholesome’ experience of a sensorial meal, marrying modernity and subtlety through a fusion of craft and organic food. |
Sustainability | Pairing modernity and subtlety whilst designing, the Atelier with its philosophy of celebrating local craft and all processes handmade and Sequel’s brand ethos earthy at its core using local ingredients find a semblance that translates into the spaces created. Sequel and its approach to design enabled a localization of resources. With a significant amount of the work being completed during the covid crisis, the space ensured the usage of local materials sourced within the country thereby reducing the carbon footprint significantly. From its hand crafted earthy terracotta brick flooring to the custom designed lighting and finishes, most products and techniques were sourced within the country thereby celebrating the essence of local craft and artisanship. The emphasis on the inculcation of craftsmanship makes the spaces more sustainable. Besides this, simple but significant measures such as the usage of Chargeable battery operated lamps and sensor lighting in the powder room lowering the overall power consumption encourages optimal usage of electricity. |
