Project Description

A hotel "Galleria" was thriving in the heart of a city. A decade after it had opened its door, the hotel needed a new outfit.
We were supposed to redesign the entrance hall and the lobby with the reception for the Subotica’s hotel Galleria. Clients wanted a more attractive and exclusive look. We decided to try to do something more, so its spirit can match the location. That is why we did our best to interpret art nouveau in a modern way. Art nouveau is something Subotica is well-known all over Europe.
The logo and colours of the hotel Galleria were the elements from which we developed the whole new concept. We complemented it with organic forms and floral shapes. Ornaments are done in perforated metal surfaces that originate also from the symbol of the hotel Galleria. e even matched the decoration with the new concept – the art pieces are monochromatic ceramic surfaces with floral motifs.
Outside, the space in front of the reception wasn’t looking very nice. We destroyed the existing temporary object and made a mini square with the fountain. The square is at the same time a piece of art, surrounded by fluid urban street furniture. Altogether it is an additional space which guests can enjoy at, warmer and more comfortable.
The project is finished in January 2020. The total cost of the project was less than 500.000,00 euro.

Materials Used

We wanted to interpret art nouveau in a modern way. Because of that, the big decorative wall is covered with the fabric in asymmetrical and fluid shapes which surround the logo of the hotel. It gives one unexpected decoration which all visitors will remember, and at the same time, adds warmth and comfort and welcomes guests.

The central motifs for the pillars are the uniquely designed tiles made by the worldwide famous factory Zolnai. During the last century, they produced most of the tiles for the art nouveau buildings in this city. We asked the Zolnai team to use old technics in a modern way to produce our design.

The copper is on the different parts of the furniture, completing the space by its texture and colour. The very specific details are the perforated metal surfaces – their design originates from the symbol of the hotel Galleria.

We even matched the decoration with the new concept – the art pieces are monochromatic ceramic surfaces with floral motifs.

The look of the space is completed by granite ceramics and walnut linings. Even the decoration (round lamps and pendants with brass details) are chosen to remind of art nouveau.

Since the hotel is based in the old town of Subotica, we wanted to connect the interior with the outside area in the same manner. Thanks to that, in front of the reception we designed a fountain and a bench welcoming visitors but also passers-by and residents of the city remembering them to be proud of a great heritage they have around.

Sustainability

We used regional companies and workers for all the works. We tried to use as many as possible materials which we can find nearby.

Issues Faced

Some of the elements were difficult to be produced in Serbia, so we had to do some of the experiments with the local workers - ornaments, fountain and bench were very tricky.
Decorative tiles produced by the Zolnai factory required many design rounds until the smallest detail was done in a way to be not too expensive and possible to produce. At the same time, we wanted to give them the same feeling as the old ones which can be found in the local buildings.
